Board authorizes sheriff’s office to administer Toward Zero Deaths enforcement grant

The McLeod County Board on Aug. 4 adopted Resolution 26 CB 20 authorizing Sergeant Kyle Jorgensen to act as fiscal agent for the Toward Zero Deaths enforcement grant for the 10/1/2026–9/30/2027 grant year.
A sheriff's office representative told the board the county has administered the enforcement portion of the program in recent years and that the grant funds federal dollars routed through the state to local agencies for additional enforcement during high‑risk periods such as holidays. "This is the enforcement grant part of the Towards 0 deaths program, and this provides federal dollars funneled to the state, that are then allocated through this grant to the local fiscal agent," the representative said. The speaker noted participating agencies have included Hutchinson, Glencoe, Brown, Winsted and Lester Prairie in past years.
Commissioner Schmalz moved adoption of the resolution; the board approved it by voice vote. Officials said the grant covers overtime and extra enforcement without a direct expense to county taxpayers.
