McLeod County approves joint powers agreements to conduct election recounts

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted Aug. 4 to approve joint powers agreements with the state that designate the county as the recount official for any required recounts arising from the August primary and the general election.
Auditor‑Treasurer Janet told the board the JPA framework is the same the county uses every two years. Under the agreements, McLeod County would begin any recount as soon as permitted by Minnesota law and would continue until the ballots are counted or challenged. "We do this every 2 years when we have a state election," Janet said, explaining that signing the JPA keeps ballots here in McLeod for recounts instead of sending them to another county.
County officials said the first agreement covers the Aug. primary and the second covers the general election later in the year; both require the county to follow applicable Minnesota laws and any state guidance. Commissioner Chaska moved for approval; the motion carried by voice vote. Janet reminded residents that early voting runs through Monday, Aug. 10, and that polling places for city residents include the city of Hutchinson within its boundaries.
