The Nottoway County Board of Supervisors opened a public hearing on an ordinance to change the timing of assessments for new construction so values can be placed on the tax rolls prorated as soon as a project is finished. The chair explained that in prior years an appraisal firm compiled new construction once yearly; the proposed change would let assessors and staff (working with Nick Bowles and Christie) value completed construction promptly so it appears on tax rolls in the year it goes into service.
"So now when a new construction is gonna be finished, working with Nick Bowles and Christie, they'll put a value on it, and it can go on a tax roll prorated as soon as it's finished," the chair said. The board opened and then closed the public hearing after noting that no citizens had signed up to speak. Supervisors said the ordinance is intended to capture taxable value in the year a property begins using county services instead of waiting to tax the following year.
No final action was taken at the hearing; staff will publish ordinance language and the board will consider formal readings and adoption at a future meeting.
