On July 9, 2026 the Onslow County Planning Board recommended approval of a zoning text amendment (ZOTA-2026-00002) that would modify Article 10 Section 10.6A Table 10-1 to permit an alternative landscaping standard to be coordinated with the Planning Director. The Board voted 5-0 to recommend approval and to approve the related consistency statement; Brandon Howard moved and William Sanders seconded the motion.
Senior Planner Joseph Bauer presented the proposed text change. Base Liaison Timothy McCurry asked why landscaping at Albert Ellis Airport is governed by county ordinance rather than federal regulation. Director Carter Metcalf clarified that Albert Ellis Airport is a county facility, which places certain landscaping requirements under county authority. The amendment is intended to allow landscaping choices that do not compromise aircraft safety; the Board's recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Commissioners for final action.
