Board appoints Lucie Skjefte to District 3 after tied ranked-choice result decided by coin flip

The Minneapolis Board of Education appointed Lucie Skjefte to fill the vacant Election District 3 seat after a tie in the board’s ranked-choice tabulation was resolved by a coin flip. The board recorded a 4–4 tie between Fatimah Hussein and Lucie Skjefte and, “pursuant to the adopted process,” declared Skjefte the winner by coin flip before moving to appoint her.
Director Ira Jourdain moved to appoint Skjefte effective immediately upon completion of the oath of office to serve the remainder of the current District 3 term, which expires on Jan. 4, 2027. The motion carried on a roll-call vote with Aye votes from Abdi, Cerrillo, Norvell, Jourdain, Beachy, Ellison and Emerick (7) and one recorded abstention by Sharon El-Amin. The minutes include the ranked-choice tabulation rounds and the tie-breaking step; the board did not record additional debate in the meeting minutes.
