MPS outlines community engagement plan to weigh programs and priorities through March 2025

At the Nov. 26 Committee of the Whole meeting, Minneapolis Public School District staff presented a community engagement project plan tied to the Transformation work. Staff said the plan aims for participation rates representative of key stakeholder groups, at least six total engagement opportunities and multiple two-way engagement formats between January and March 17, 2025.
Presenters listed specific Parent Advisory Council and stakeholder meetings: District Parent Advisory Council (Jan. 13), Black Parent Advisory Council (Jan. 21), Latino Parent Advisory Council (Feb. 12), Hmong Parent Advisory Council (Jan. 23), Somali Parent Advisory Council (Jan. 31), and American Indian Parent Advisory Council (Jan. 16); several other advisory meetings were listed as TBA. Staff affirmed they will monitor representation to ensure participation mirrors district demographics and said they will meet families “where they are” to improve accessibility (catering, transportation, interpreters).
Slides summarized documents reviewed (44) and stakeholder attribution counts; qualitative themes included school climate, family involvement, language and culture, academic program and equity concerns. The presentation displayed verbatim respondent feedback including: “Decisions that involve input from parents and community ...just because we are silent, doesn't mean we don't care for our kids. If we don't feel valued and heard at the table, we don't want to waste our time.” That excerpt was attributed on the slides to a Parent Participatory Evaluation participant.
Staff said summary reports and documents reviewed will be posted to the Transformation website on Nov. 27, 2024 and invited stakeholders to contact engagement@mpls.k12.mn.us with questions.
