Board approves accessory-structure variance to allow larger barns for property maintenance
Summary
The BZA approved a development-standard variance allowing accessory square footage to exceed the primary residence for two barn additions (30x60 and 20x60) on a rural property at 8385 E. 100 N., citing practical needs for equipment storage on smaller non-farm ag parcels.

The board approved Docket 2026-18-DSV to allow accessory square footage to exceed the floor area of the primary residence at 8385 East 100 North, enabling two additions to an existing barn. Planning staff supported the variance, noting many rural parcels that are not large enough to be classified as farms yet still require significant equipment storage; the additions were found to be subordinate in height and otherwise compliant with development standards.
Petitioner Donna Tanner said the space is needed to store personal farm equipment and a new horse trailer and to protect investments from weather. Neighbors asked questions about drainage and setbacks; staff and the petitioner said drainage and stormwater matters will be addressed through the building-permit and ILP (improvement location permit) processes, which must comply with DPW standards before permits can be issued. The board approved the variance and noted that permitting-level reviews will address drainage and related engineering issues.
