Southwest schools add 9th-period study hall and pilot math intervention for elementary students

The district will implement a 9th Period Study Hall at the Jr/Sr High for students failing classes and pilot an HMH Math Supplement and Intervention program in the elementary school; Family Math Night is set for Jan. 22.
Superintendent Drew Billeter reported for Principal Springer that the Jr/Sr High will implement a 9th Period Study Hall to support students with failing grades. Under the plan, students with failing grades will be required to remain at the high school from 3:35 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to complete assignments intended to improve their grades and avoid placement on the eligibility list.
Principal Tara Fries reported the elementary school will begin winter MAPS testing for all students and will pilot a HMH Math Supplement and Intervention program that customizes instruction based on students’ MAPS scores. Fries encouraged parents and students to attend Family Math Night on Jan. 22. The meeting minutes do not include evaluation metrics or pilot duration; those details would require follow-up with school administration.
