Survey: coaches and community prioritize competition and travel; Treynor board weighs the trade-offs

The activities director presented results from a community and coaches survey as part of the board's review of a Hawkeye 10 invitation. He also reported that head coaches and sponsors (17 contacted) provided input: as of a 4:30 p.m. tally, 12 coaches/sponsors favored remaining in the Western Iowa Conference, 3 favored the Hawkeye 10, and 2 were neutral. Board members said the coaches' sport-by-sport concerns mattered because participation and scheduling impacts vary considerably across activities such as volleyball, basketball, football, and track.
Members discussed how different sports' scheduling formats affect lower-level participation: tournament-heavy sports (volleyball) or single-night conference meets (track, cross country) provide different opportunities than sports scheduled head-to-head every night. That variation influenced several members who concluded sport-by-sport impacts should carry weight in any realignment decision.
