Kent County authorizes environmental assessment for potential Cedar Street medical examiner facility

The Building Authority authorized a Phase I environmental site assessment at 1401 Cedar Street as the county pursues purchase of a facility to house the medical examiner and MSU programs; the project budget remains on target at $18.5 million.
Tim Bradshaw, Facilities Management Director, told the Kent County Building Authority on June 10 that leadership is pursuing an option to purchase a facility on Cedar Street to serve the county’s medical examiner and Michigan State University medical students. "The overall project budget remains on target at $18.5 million," Bradshaw said during the presentation.
Bradshaw said a TowerPinkster feasibility study shows the Cedar Street site has sufficient square footage and would accommodate a sally port and teaching space for MSU. He recommended moving forward with site due diligence; the authority voted to authorize Fishbeck to perform a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment at 1401 Cedar Street for an amount not to exceed $10,000. The motion was moved by Scott Conners and supported by Colin Schiefler; the motion carried.
The county plans next to negotiate a purchase price if the environmental assessment is satisfactory. Bradshaw said that MSU would potentially operate and maintain the facility if acquired, while the county would hold title.
