At the April 16 work session, Dede Corpening reviewed the Budget Committee’s responsibilities and the mechanics of the district budget. She emphasized that the committee’s role is to receive the proposed budget and superintendent’s message, ask clarifying questions, hear public input, approve the proposed budget for public notice, and establish the proposed tax rate — but not to set salaries, change staffing, adopt policy, or adopt the final budget, which are board authorities.
Corpening also summarized budget account coding (fund, object and function) and revenue categories (local, intermediate, state, federal and other). She presented the budget process phases: Propose (staff development), Approve (committee review), Adopt (final adoption by the School Board before July 1) and Adjustments (post‑adoption modifications handled by the Board).
