Brookings-Harbor students earn Wildland Firefighter Type 2 certification through new CTE course

Brookings-Harbor High School’s new Wildland Firefighting Career and Technical Education course earned praise from the district board on May 21 for providing students with industry-aligned training and credentialing.
Teacher Kristy Kleespies introduced the program developed in partnership with the Coos Forest Protective Association; CFPA representative Jesse Orozco commended the students’ professionalism and said the course supports workforce development in fire prevention and response. Students completed physical fitness assessments, hands-on equipment training, and classroom work aligned with federal standards; several students have already expressed interest in summer employment with CFPA and other regional fire crews.
Board members applauded the program for equipping students with real-world, employable skills and fostering career exploration in an in-demand public service field. The district said the certification pathway offers both career and postsecondary options for students interested in firefighting and emergency response.
