The Wayzata Public Schools Board of Education approved updated Standard Operating Procedures at its Feb. 10, 2025 meeting that, among other administrative clarifications, add the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the start of regular monthly board meetings.
Board Chair Milind Sohoni presided over the meeting and the packet states that the SOPs were reviewed by administration and the policy committee before final board approval. The SOP update also formalizes agenda timelines, consent‑agenda procedures and public comment rules for regular and special meetings. The packet includes the full text of the revised procedures and shows the document marked "APPROVED: February 10, 2025."
District materials explain the change as optional participation: "Anyone who does not wish to participate in reciting the pledge for any personal reasons may elect not to do so." The revised SOPs reiterate existing practices for agenda posting, recording votes, and audience participation and add procedural detail about agenda production and board communications.
The board did not expand the district’s policy on compelled participation; the SOP language clarifies that participation in the pledge is voluntary. The SOP text and the board packet are available in the district record for public review.
