The Amherst Traffic Safety Board voted on Aug. 5 to request that Erie County remove passing zones on Hopkins Road when the county next restripes the corridor after engineering's speed counters showed an 85th-percentile speed of about 44 mph in both directions.
Chris Schreigel reported counts from Pole 3200 (the resident's location) showing northbound and southbound 85th-percentile speeds of 44 mph and daily volumes of approximately 630 and 670 vehicles. Chris said the data show a small number of high-speed events—about 14 vehicles in one observed hour traveling more than 10 mph over the posted 40 mph speed limit.
Chair Eric Fraas said the board would send a letter to the county asking removal of passing zones at restriping and referred the speeding pockets to the Amherst Police Department for enforcement. Board members cautioned about recommending a lower posted speed in town sections on a county road and noted that striping and signs on county highways are under county jurisdiction.
What happens next: engineering will draft the county request; the board referred enforcement opportunities to police and asked the county for clarification on its stripe/zone decisions.
