Board deadlocks on 'cross traffic does not stop' placards at Gresham and Maynard

The Amherst Traffic Safety Board considered adding "Cross traffic does not stop" plaques to the stop signs at the Gresham Drive and Maynard intersection but a motion to do so failed on a 3'to'3 tie on Aug. 5.
Engineering liaison Chris Schreigel presented count and crash data. He said Maynard carries higher entering volume and that 85th-percentile speeds on Maynard were roughly 31'to'3 mph. Stop-sign warrant analysis using the MUTCD thresholds showed the intersection did not meet the volume criteria for an all-way stop; Chris reported four crashes over 10 years, three of which he said were "correctable with an all-way stop" but noted the usual practice is to assess crash history over the last three years.
Resident Susan Macro, who lives on the corner, told the board the monitoring period included the July Fourth week and urged a seven-day count to include weekend behavior. "I appreciate the response," she said, but asked for fuller data coverage. Board members debated whether cross-traffic placards would address the principal complaint—some argued the offset geometry and driver expectations make the intersection confusing while others said the placard would not reduce high-speed traffic on the main approach.
Kevin Cantwell moved to add the cross-traffic placards; Patricia Dunn seconded the motion. The vote was 3'to'3 and the motion did not pass. Chair Eric Fraas recorded that a tie means the board does not advance the installation and the item was received and filed for the record.
What happens next: the board left the item on file; members suggested re-evaluating if additional crash data or larger counts are submitted.
