Port Orford-Langlois board unanimously approves Family Academy alternative program

The Port Orford-Langlois School Board voted unanimously Aug. 18 to approve a new Alternative Program called the 2CJ Family Academy.
Superintendent Aaron Miller described the program as a separate enrollment stream intended to serve families currently homeschooling or seeking an alternative to traditional classroom placement. Miller told the board the district needs at least 20 students for the academy to be viable and that he has been contacting homeschooled families; he said the district has "two good candidates" for a teacher to oversee the program and that additional staff would be hired if more students enroll. Board member Carol Hacherl raised concerns about impacts on currently enrolled students; Miller clarified Family Academy students would be new enrollments and not drawn from the district's current rolls.
Judy Miles moved to approve the Family Academy and Carol Hacherl seconded; Miles, Hacherl and Chair Korinn Hockett voted to approve the program. The minutes record no dissent and the motion passed unanimously. The district will proceed with implementation steps contingent on enrollment reaching the stated viability threshold.
