Director of Technology Jeff Gibbs told the board the technology team closed 11,624 tickets and repaired 1,362 Chromebooks in the past 12 months, and noted the district manages more than 10,000 Chromebooks that are periodically refreshed as they age.
Gibbs announced a new parent portal (Lightspeed) enabling parents to review students' web history on district devices and temporarily deactivate Chromebooks for limits such as bedtime. He noted the district uses E-Rate discounts (95% for connectivity) via MESD and is reviewing software usage to reduce costs. Gibbs also described two student pathways: a CAL internship where students learn Chromebook repair and a Fall apprenticeship program at Barlow to provide hands-on IT experience.
Board members asked about account protections for parents signing into Chrome and how to access the webinar recording; staff said the webinar is posted on the district YouTube channel and guidance on apps and access is available on the district website under Families > Tech Tools.
