Page County engineer reports crew shortages, salt price rise and recent road repairs

JD King, Page County engineer, updated the board on secondary-roads operations and winter preparation, saying crews are short-staffed and some personnel are on vacation or otherwise not available. He reported bridge washing and gravel removal are underway and that the county is temporarily using private fuel pumps because a part for a bulk diesel tank is delayed.
King told the board the county contracted road salt “for the winter… at $75 a ton,” noting that last year the price was around $69 and that the contract has parameters that differ from a DOT contract. He said the county still has two full bins of salt—“a couple hundred tons”—left from last season, and that that amount was essentially what the county used last year in total.
King also reported recent project work: the J‑53 project completed, crews applied slurry and a chip seal on portions of T Avenue and performed oil work on Teak Avenue south of J‑503. He said the FY26 annual report for secondary roads was submitted to the DOT and will be brought to the board after DOT review and approval.
The engineer answered board questions about a sign truck (reported as working) and noted ongoing equipment maintenance and parts procurement. The board had no further questions and moved on to the next agenda item.
