Pendleton board reviews package of policy revisions, including new graduation credit requirements

The board heard first readings on multiple policies: cybersecurity (EHB), nondiscrimination/Title IX-related reversions (AC, GBN/JBA), instructional materials (IIA), and graduation requirements (IKF/IKFB) that add three 0.5-credit requirements and change certificate options.
At the work session, staff presented multiple policy items for first reading. Michelle Jones introduced an optional EHB cybersecurity policy from OSBA in response to increasing cybersecurity issues in schools. Separately, the board reviewed recommended reversions of AC (Nondiscrimination and Civil Rights) and GBN/JBA (Sexual Harassment) to March 2023 language following changes to Title IX guidance.
Matt Yoshioka reviewed instructional materials policy IIA, which tightens the approval and reconsideration process for instructional materials and complaints. He also presented proposed changes to graduation policy IKF and graduation exercises policy IKFB: the IKF draft adds three 0.5-credit requirements (personal finance, career pathway, U.S. civics), removes the "alternate certificate" option and adds a "certificate of attendance" option; IKFB clarifies allowable Native American items of cultural significance during exercises. The policies were presented for initial review and will return for action at a later meeting.
