Summary

Stanton described multiple targeted programs: a veterans employment initiative (more than 7,000 veterans and spouses placed in a one-year period), Operation Palmetto Employment (29 veteran-focused job fairs in a year) and a 'Second Chance' program sending staff into work-release facilities. She said the Department of Labor audited the veterans program and "they didn't have any findings, they didn't have any observations...All they said was, you have a lot of best practices. The US is 1 of the gold standards in the country in terms of our veterans program and have asked us to give technical assistance and support to other states."
Committee members raised employer hesitancy to hire individuals with criminal records and asked about expungement limits and training while incarcerated. Stanton described employer outreach, federal tax credits and a pilot that places staff in correctional facilities to provide pre-release employment services and transition planning.
