Director Stanton: DEW moved from UI crisis to $590M trust fund reserve
Summary
Director Cheryl Stanton told the Labor, Commerce and Industry committee that the Department of Employment and Workforce repaid federal debt and, as of April 30, held 'over $590,000,000' in the unemployment insurance trust fund, and outlined program and staffing changes behind that recovery.

Cheryl Stanton, director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, opened the joint committee performance review by saying the agency has moved past its unemployment insurance crisis and rebuilt financial stability. "We have not only paid off that debt but we are now at a point where we have a reserve as of April 30 of over $590,000,000 in the trust fund balance," she told the Labor, Commerce and Industry panel.
Stanton attributed the change to operational fixes, improved decisions on benefit payments, and stepped-up overpayment recovery efforts. She also framed the improvement as part of a broader shift toward workforce programs that put people to work, saying the agency put "more than 400,000 people to work" over a recent three-year window and has retooled staff responsibilities to focus on customer service and outcomes.
