Cheryl Stanton, director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, opened the committee review by crediting agency staff and partners for operational improvements and a stronger workforce focus. She said the agency had moved from crisis mode on unemployment insurance to a point where “we have a reserve as of April 30 of over $590,000,000 in the trust fund balance.”
Stanton outlined that the agency reformed benefit accuracy, reduced improper payments and strengthened overpayment recovery while expanding workforce programs. She described a two‑track organization (operations and workforce initiatives) intended to let one leader focus on daily delivery and another on strategic workforce projects. Committee members asked for updated April/May processing figures and for follow‑up on tax‑rate projections and collections timing.
