South River wins multiple NJDOT grants; Fernandes Construction named apparent low bidder for roadway work

Borough Engineer Justin Cornell told the council that South River received several NJDOT Local Aid grants, including $681,405.00 for a set of streets (Leonardine Ave. to Grand Ave. and others), $606,980.00 for improvements to Darrow Street and adjacent segments, and additional awards totaling hundreds of thousands for FY2023–FY2026 projects. Cornell said design and preconstruction work is underway and that Fernandes Construction is the apparent low bidder on some FY2025 work.
Separately on the consent agenda council moved to award a contract to Fernandes Construction, Inc. for Various Roadway Improvements at a bid price of $616,561.79 (Resolution 2026-148). The award was made subject to NJDOT approval and submission of required bid documents; the Chief Financial Officer certified funds are available in account C-06-25019-105.
