During the public-comment period, multiple residents urged the board to consider compassion and second-chance options for staff member Chet Hesson and raised facilities concerns.
Devonique Barnes, who identified herself as a Monroe High graduate and local business owner, described the character of Chet Hesson and asked the board to "give him a 2nd chance," saying she believed the punishment to be excessive. Gerald Hesson, who identified himself as a parent of Chet and Grant Hesson, echoed support and urged the board to "think about all he did" and the character those involved had shown.
Separately, Yvonne Nedaker told the board she was concerned about pervasive marijuana odor in the community and whether that exposure could affect students; she also raised a facilities issue with locker-room hot water for the swim team during early-morning practices and asked the district to look into it. "With Monroe having marijuana everywhere ... I'm wondering if there's any way to assess whether this is affecting our students," Nedaker said.
The board acknowledged public comment and closed the public-comment period before proceeding to closed session.
