State workforce strategy shifts to sector-based planning with education and commerce

Cheryl Stanton told lawmakers the State Workforce Development Board led a sector strategies effort to identify high-growth sectors and create regional leadership teams that include employers, tech colleges, K–12 and local economic developers. "We identified what our growth sectors are in this state," she said, citing manufacturing, healthcare, IT, construction and logistics as focal areas.
Stanton said the initiative uses completer data and ZIP-code-level analysis to align training programs with projected job openings and to develop talent pipelines from K–12 through higher education. She emphasized that the approach is collaborative: data teams include DEW, Commerce, the Technical College System and the Commission on Higher Education, and final decisions about school curricula remain with education leaders.
