At the start of the Aug. 3 meeting, a parent asked the board whether parents from the Glacier Elementary community had been included on principal interview panels and expressed concern about whether new principals understand special-education requirements.
"I know our principal now has been on our site, but my question is, were there any opportunity for parents to take place on the panel?" the parent asked, adding that meaningful inclusion depends on panels that discuss special education and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The parent emphasized the importance of LRE — least restrictive environment — and asked whether the district will be "supportive in our environment when we pursue inclusion." (Speaker provided contact information for a follow-up.)
Board leadership responded that the public comment period is not a question-and-answer forum; the board thanked the speaker and said the superintendent's office will follow up directly. "You gave us your contact information, so the office of the superintendent will be contacting you and giving you responses," the Chair said.
Why it matters: parents asked for transparency and participation in hiring decisions affecting school culture and services for students with disabilities. The board's offer to follow up by the superintendent's office means details about interview-panel composition and the district's process for assessing candidates' special-education experience should be provided after the meeting.
