Planning Commission backs raising hotel height limit to 55 feet in TA, IB and PCD zones

Planner Sabrina Seamon presented a staff-initiated text amendment (TEXT-3143) to increase maximum building height to fifty-five feet in the Tourist Accommodation (TA), Intermediate Business (IB) and Planned Commercial Development (PCD) zones. Seamon said the proposal was aimed at allowing four-story hotels and creating consistency across zones where hotels are permitted.
"As buildings fifty-five (55) feet high can be adequately serviced by Morristown Fire Department, and the additional layer of building inspections by the State Fire Marshal, staff does not have any reservations regarding public safety of this request," Sabrina Seamon said. Seamon also noted that the current ordinance allows taller structures (55 feet) in Heavy and Light Industrial districts and that aligning height limits would reduce inconsistency.
Mayor Gary Chesney moved to approve forwarding the text amendment to City Council; Commissioner Alpha Alexander seconded. The vote was recorded as 8 yes, 0 no and 1 abstain; the commission forwarded the amendment to the City Council for its consideration.
