Board discusses private-school busing; proposition would expand mileage to 19 miles

During the public-comment portion of the May 12 hearing, community member Karen Kiaer asked how many students are bused to private and parochial schools and why the Board was considering a mileage increase. Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger replied that "there are approximately twenty-eight (28) students who take the bus to private and parochial schools" and that a petition from a parent prompted the proposal to expand the mileage cap from 15 to 19 miles.
Doelger explained that one student currently lives within the 15-mile range to Our Lady of the Hamptons but that if that student were to move, no other student attending that school would fall within the existing 15-mile limit; increasing the cap to 19 miles would ensure continued busing for those students. The Board placed the mileage change as Proposition 3 on the May 20 ballot. The Board also provided a list of the private schools and student counts that will be transported if approved: Ross School (4), Hayground School (7), Our Lady of the Hamptons (11), and Peconic Community School (6), totaling 28 students for 2025'26.
