Shelter Island board adopts $13,855,325 budget and will pierce tax cap for 2025–26

The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education voted April 7 to adopt a proposed $13,855,325 budget for the 2025–26 school year and approved the district’s Property Tax Report Card. Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger presented the budget and reviewed revenue, impact estimates and funding options ahead of the public hearing and vote.
Board member Katherine Rossi-Snook moved to adopt the budget and Dawn Hedberg seconded; the motion "carried unanimously." The board set a public Budget Hearing for May 12, 2025, and the School Budget Vote for May 20, 2025, with polls open noon–9 p.m. District Clerk Jacqueline Dunning was identified as the contact for absentee ballots.
Board member Anthony J. Rando said the district has avoided piercing the tax cap for the prior ten years but that rising costs made it necessary this year. "Our school is providing a great product for the students and our students are the future of our community. It’s an investment and well worth it," Rando said.
The adoption sends the budget to voters; final approval depends on the May 20 vote. The board also approved the Property Tax Report Card as part of the same resolution.
