Shelter Island board holds public hearing on revised 2025–26 budget ahead of June 17 revote

The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education opened a public hearing on the revised 2025–26 budget at 6:02 p.m. President Kathleen Lynch invited Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger to outline the proposed expenditure and revenue changes and what would be at stake if voters reject the revote scheduled for June 17, 2025. Community members challenged the board’s proposed cuts to a Pre‑K3 early‑education program. "Cutting an early education program from the budget hurts the community," said Elizabeth Galle during public comment, urging the board to reconsider. Dr. Doelger and board members said the original budget that exceeded the tax cap was intended to sustain the district long term; with the failed vote, administrators prioritized reductions with the goal of minimizing community impact, but the Pre‑K3 line remained on the list of suggested cuts.
