Shelter Island weighs joining Southampton-led grant for shared work barge and vac truck

A staff member said Southampton would be the primary applicant and that Shelter Island had been invited to participate under an intermunicipal agreement. Board members asked whether partnering would create fiscal liability, how billing would work, and whether Shelter Island’s own funding application would be disadvantaged by joining a regional bid.
Members also raised logistical concerns about shared use — scheduling, travel time for a barge, and the ability of partner municipalities to access equipment during simultaneous peak needs — and noted that Shelter Island’s ferry schedule and island location make on-call access more difficult than for mainland villages. The board agreed to gather more fiscal detail from the draft IMA and to discuss the grant application in the capital planning meeting and on a future agenda.
