CMO outlines quality performance and upcoming CMS measure changes

Dr. Okolo (CMO), introduced by the chair, told the board the hospital’s clinical quality dashboard is "full of green" on key measures even as utilization rises.
He reported the average daily census has climbed to 15–16, compared with a historical 10–11, and credited cross‑functional improvements that keep quality stable. "We're doing very well from those standpoints," he said, but warned that CMS periodically changes measure priorities.
Dr. Okolo described two areas new to CMS reporting cycles: aging measures (the '4Ms' — including attention to autonomy/agency and nutrition) that will replace some prior measures in January of next year, and scrutiny of co‑administration of benzodiazepines and opioids what the CMO called a priority for safer discharge and medication reconciliation that has already begun this year. He said the hospital is using project management and electronic tools (EPIC, Power BI) to improve data integrity and electronic clinical quality measure reporting (eCQMs).
