Superintendent to seek community input on new device policy; Tot Lot lease and security upgrades reported

Superintendent Dr. Brian Doelger briefed the board on several administrative matters at the July 14 meeting. He told the board that under a new New York State Education Law the district must adopt a policy restricting use of "internet-enabled devices" during the entire school day on school grounds; he said he "will be holding meetings with parents and students to get their input on what they think the parameters of the Shelter Island policy should be." The district will solicit feedback and then return proposed parameters to the board for consideration.
Doelger also reported that the Town of Shelter Island has expressed interest in renewing the lease for the Tot Lot on School Street; the town’s Highway Superintendent, Ken Lewis, has proposed maintaining and upgrading the space using grant funding at no cost to the district. In addition, Doelger said installation of a blue-light and button classroom security system is underway as part of safety enhancements, and professional-development offerings for next year will focus on science curriculum and mentoring newer teachers amid budget constraints.
