County approves conversion and resurfacing to expand pickleball at Victor Ward Park

Parks staff presented two coordinated RFPs to convert an existing tennis/tennis court area at Victor Ward Park into a dedicated pickleball complex and to resurface adjoining courts. The conversion would add six dedicated pickleball courts to the existing six, yielding a total of 12 dedicated courts; resurfacing will address cracking and gaps in the play surface.
"This will allow us to increase our opportunities for pickleball from the current 6 courts that are on place to an additional 6, making it a total of 12," the parks presenter said. Staff said the combined project is funded through SPLOST 2022 with a total project budget of $125,000; two contracts (fencing and resurfacing) together are expected to fit within that budget. Commissioners approved issuance of the NTP and contract awards with a planned spring construction window so weather will be favorable for resurfacing and to minimize court downtime for users.
Staff said fencing will be removed first, resurfacing done in an estimated March timeframe, and fencing reinstalled 2–4 weeks after surfacing so play can resume with the new layout. Commissioners approved both RFP awards and noted staff would coordinate timing to preserve indoor play availability while the outdoor courts are down for construction.
