Committee approves no-standing school-day parking and painted pedestrian lane on McKenna Road

The Public Works Committee approved a recommendation to establish a no-standing/no-stopping parking restriction on the southbound lane of McKenna Road between Nichols and Maywood from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days to accommodate a painted pedestrian walking lane. Staff said the proposed sign language mirrors existing restrictions on nearby streets and reflected chief guidance to eliminate loopholes that allow idling. "No standing, which means no idling, stopping," staff explained, and the signs would be regulatory and enforceable.

Members discussed practical effects: whether the restriction should be limited to morning and afternoon school hours, where parents would instead pick up children, and whether the painted stripe would create parking confusion until sidewalks are built (no sidewalk schedule at present). Staff said residents on the street were notified and largely supportive; the committee moved, seconded and approved the ordinance language and the pavement-marking request by voice vote, and will forward the recommendation to the city council for final action.
