District English Learner (EL) program staff reported progress and next steps to trustees, including results from the recent reclassification ceremony: 134 students were redesignated as fluent English proficient across the district this year. Staff said 50 of those redesignated had earlier been classified as long-term English learners (LTELs), and 11 of the redesignated students have active individualized education programs (IEPs).
Staff explained changes in assessment tools (switch from Galileo to IXL) and how adjusted cut scores and coordinated teacher and family consultations contributed to the redesignations. The district is expanding progress-monitoring systems (Elevation) and is preparing an EL program master-plan update to align with state and federal monitoring requirements. Staff said they will continue to focus on supports for LTELs, newcomers and students with IEPs, and stressed the need for a native-language assessment tool for students who do not speak Spanish.
Trustees asked for further data and breakdowns by language, site and subgroup; staff agreed to provide more detailed numbers in follow-up reports.
