Pleasant Valley demonstrates Heggerty phonemic program and pilot literacy tools

Pleasant Valley Elementary staff presented a classroom demonstration to trustees showing Heggerty phonemic awareness lessons, multisyllabic decoding practice and substitution activities used in kindergarten through second grade. The principal said school-level data indicate rising proficiency in foundational reading skills and described professional development and OrtonGillingham (OG) training that staff want to expand.
Teachers and classroom leaders guided trustees and guests through live demonstrations of segmentation, substitution and vowel-change exercises. A teacher testimonial included in the presentation said Heggerty instruction "has increased the pace at which students are learning and showing mastery of foundational reading skills and applying word attack strategies." Trustees praised the demonstration and photo-taking followed the session.
Staff requested continued planning time and funding to send more teachers for OG training next year to scale the approach.
