City Manager Jon Schneider reviewed proposed amendments to Zoning Ordinance Chapter 5 (Signs & Billboards) at the July 9 Planning Commission meeting, saying the primary changes respond to legal constraints on content‑based regulation and update rules for temporary and electronic signs. Schneider summarized the main proposed changes: per a previous Supreme Court case, signs can no longer be regulated by content; temporary signs without a permit may total up to 20 square feet in area subject to provisions; and the ordinance would add standards for electronic signage.
No substantive objections were raised by commissioners during the preview; Schneider said a public hearing on the sign ordinance amendments will be scheduled in August for formal comment and action. The commission did not vote on the sign amendments at this meeting.
