Council considers reactivating Historic Preservation Commission; four candidates proposed

Bridal Carter, director of community economic development, told the council staff is proposing to reconvene a Historic Preservation Commission to help guide downtown revitalization and address design and aesthetic questions citywide. "We wanna reestablish a historic preservation commission," Carter said, and she proposed four applicants with staggered terms so the board can maintain quorum and continuity.
Carter named the four applicants before council: Marion Glass, Angela O'Neil, Jackie Childress and Joe Collins of Collins Barbecue. She said the last recorded meeting for the commission was in October 2023 and that having a working commission will help the city address downtown improvements and any property-specific cases that arise.
Councilmembers asked that staff confirm term start and end dates so the appointments align with an ordinance that staggers board membership; staff agreed to adjust the cover sheet and return the item for a vote next Tuesday rather than moving it directly to consent. Council also noted the importance of training for commissioners because preservation decisions can affect property owners' costs and requirements.
