Henrico warns residents drought could prompt voluntary water restrictions; monitoring continues

Bentley Chan, Director of Public Utilities, briefed the Board on June 23 about current drought conditions and impacts on James River levels. Chan said the county has been supplementing river levels by supplying water from the Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek and warned that, given hot and dry conditions, the region "might have to impose voluntary water restrictions," such as limiting car washing, pool filling, and irrigation. He said staff will continue to monitor river levels and communicate with residents if and when restrictions are deemed necessary.
The briefing was informational. Chan did not propose mandatory conservation measures at this meeting but noted voluntary measures could be requested of residents to reduce stress on river levels. The county will provide public communication if it moves from voluntary to mandatory restrictions.
