"On the Deerpath cafeteria, which is actually gonna really kick off June 9 with the heavy work, but we're gonna start a little bit of work next week over spring break," Mr. Mortensen said, outlining the project's schedule and the district's plan to remove flooring and prepare the space for a concentrated summer construction window. He described specific scope elements that include punch‑through windows on the serving line, a movable glass partition to open the hub area into the cafeteria, refreshed multi‑user restrooms and potential kitchen equipment upgrades.
Mortensen emphasized accessibility work guided by ADA checklists and Illinois accessibility codes; the team also expects to replace an original single‑pane storefront facing the patio in a Phase C project slated for summer 2026. Staff said they will use the Deer Path work as a model for restroom and finish decisions across other schools, allowing the board to evaluate finishes before district‑wide rollouts.
Next steps include final reports and any required amendments from ISBE after review of the submitted HLS documentation; staff said they will present a finalized 10‑year capital improvement plan and life‑safety amendments to the board for future approval.
