District reports 94.4% extracurricular engagement; boosters and fee removal credited

Lake Forest CHSD 115 athletics and activities staff told the board on April 16 that student engagement in extracurriculars has risen to 94.4 percent and that targeted barrier removal measures appear to be improving participation, especially among low-income students.
Tim Burkholder, athletic director, and Ashley (activities staff) presented participation highlights and staffing updates. Burkholder said the athletics office added 76 student-athletes overall this year despite a modest district enrollment decline, and noted new programs including girls wrestling and intramural ping-pong. Ashley described the district's use of the 5 Star Students platform to disaggregate engagement data and reported: "So our engagement data through the years, last year at the end of the year we were at 90% this year, right now, we're at 94.4." She also said 86 percent of low-income students are engaged and described a booster-funded $100 participation credit that 53 students used to remove a financial barrier to involvement.
Why it matters: Higher measured engagement correlates with higher average GPAs for involved students in the district's tracking, and board members praised the work while encouraging continued outreach to reach the board's 95% engagement priority.
