The Lake Forest SD 67 Board held a public hearing March 18 on proposed honorable dismissals for part‑time speech‑language pathologists (SLPs) and preferred building substitutes (PBSs), a step the district said is driven by reduced full‑time equivalent (FTE) staffing and changes in service distribution among buildings.
"The honorable dismissal of our part time speech and language pathologists and preferred building subs is due to reduction in FTE and shifts in the service needs between our buildings," Superintendent Dr. Montgomery said during the hearing, which was convened after a board motion to recess into a public hearing. He noted state law requires a public hearing when the number of honorably dismissed employees exceeds statutory thresholds.
Montgomery told trustees that each SLP spot remains in the district staffing plan but will involve slight adjustments in FTE and building location. For preferred building substitutes, administration said each school will have one fewer PBS position next year and those incumbents will have the opportunity to reapply. Staff described PBS incumbents as non‑evaluated and without seniority rights, which administrators said is why the district views the proposed approach as the fairest method of handling reductions.
After discussion the board adjourned the hearing and later, as an action item, approved a resolution authorizing the honorable dismissals for the affected part‑time SLPs and the preferred building substitutes by roll call vote. The approval was recorded on the board's March 18 consent agenda under item 5 (SLPs) and item 6 (PBSs).
