Vegetable specialist urges renewed focus on farm food safety; county farm tour announced

Robert Hadad, Vegetable Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension, told the Economic Development & Planning Committee that farm food safety remains a top priority for the regional vegetable program and for Wayne County growers. He cited the long recovery period after a past E. coli outbreak tied to spinach, saying "it took the spinach industry nearly ten years to recover," to illustrate why rigorous food-safety practices and grower education are necessary.
Nancy Gift, Director of the Wayne County Cornell Cooperative Extension, said the Farm Bureau is coordinating with Interim County Administrator Mark Humbert to finalize date and location for an upcoming county farm tour and that former State Assemblyman Brian Manktelow has agreed to speak at the Farm Bureau's annual meeting on November 6. The extension program serves 14 participating counties and provides hands-on support for crop management, marketing and retail operations, and farm food-safety training.
