A committee member reminded participants that the City of Charleston's First Day festival is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and said the police department will host a "Night Out" event at the bus shed on Anne Street that evening, both of which will include back-to-school items and family activities.
The member also noted staggered school start times in the region (Charleston County referenced as starting Aug. 11 and Berkeley County Aug. 12) and urged drivers to slow down and be attentive around schools. "So, just again, be aware that children are out and our youth are out and about, and we just need to all be off the phones and paying attention while we're driving," the speaker said.
Committee members encouraged colleagues to staff tables and volunteer at local outreach events that weekend and reminded attendees that many agencies and community partners will be present to distribute supplies and provide information.
