County weighs site, fill and cost-sharing options for new shop building

Conservation staff presented a conceptual site layout for a proposed storage/shop building at the county farm and detailed earthwork and design trade-offs.
"It's about 8,600 yards of fill, which assuming your average dump truck is about 12 yards when you're talking, like, 720 ish dump truck loads of dirt," staff said when describing the scale of earthwork needed for a slab-on-grade building. Staff said an alternate design with a poured footing and drive-under storage might substantially reduce the required fill but would require structural engineering and formal plans and would likely increase construction complexity and cost.
Board members discussed the potential to share a joint county yard with another department to economize on wells, septic and site work. Several members raised concerns about timeline and fairness — noting that conservation's budget and other departments' financing differ — and emphasized the need for an RFP/design process if the board decides to pursue a combined facility.
Staff said they will continue site analysis and, if necessary, prepare design and procurement steps for future budget consideration.
