Student rep urges older‑student mentoring, library upgrades at Rockport School Committee

Lassa Nando, a senior at Rockport High School and the district’s student advisory representative, told the School Committee on Oct. 2 that students are pushing to increase upper‑classmen involvement with underclassmen through mentoring, tutoring and a freshmen seminar. “I have a passion for politics, and so it’s a great opportunity to be here,” Nando said, describing plans to encourage juniors and seniors to tutor and mentor younger students.
Nando also urged the committee to invest attention in the school library, saying it is currently “not the most inviting” and could better serve as a hub for tutoring and after‑school support if it offered more study spaces and a quieter environment. Committee members thanked Nando and encouraged ongoing student participation; Chair Kathy Riley and member Jess DeLisi noted the power of peer influence and asked the student representatives to continue reporting back on progress.
