Natomas Unified approves 2025'26 2nd interim budget; staff warns reserves could fall under some offers
Summary
The board unanimously approved the district's 2025'26 second interim budget and a "positive" certification. Staff said the district projects $8.6 million in reductions and warned implementing the district's current offer to the union would reduce reserves enough to risk noncompliance.

The Natomas Unified Board of Trustees voted 5'00 to approve the district's 2025'26 second interim budget report and a "positive" certification, after an in'depth presentation by Associate Superintendent Heather Brown.
Brown told trustees the 2nd interim report updates revenue and expenditure estimates, projects enrollment at 10,865 students (average daily attendance ~10,072) and shows the district currently maintaining a 9% reserve (3% state-required plus 6% board policy). She said the district has identified approximately $8,600,000 in potential budget reductions to maintain required reserves over the multi-year projection.
Brown also warned the board that "with the current offer that we've made to NTA, our reserves are projected to drop by just over 10% more, which would put us out of compliance with our board policy, and even the state required reserve of 3%." Trustees pressed staff for examples of contract and facilities-transfer reductions; staff replied the list includes reductions to a large technology contract, outside professional development, athletic turf replacement and a geothermal project at Inderkum High School, and that cash-flow deferrals from the state are a concern.
After trustees' questions, Trustee Dasek moved to approve the 2nd interim report; Trustee Mora seconded and the motion passed 5'00.
The district and union remain in negotiations; Brown said the multi'year projections presented do not include any future negotiated NTA increases.
