Community speakers praise updated student mental-health and immigration policies

Three members of the public used the non-agenda comment period to acknowledge board policy changes. Sharon Thurman, speaking for Natomas Black Parent United, thanked the board for concessions on reading, special education and safety measures. Student Lacey Johnson commended the board for revising policy 51-41.5 on student mental health, noting requirements for cultural competency training for certificated staff serving grades 7—12 and multilingual poster placement. Ricky Moreno praised the district's updated immigration policy and specifically noted its alignment with AB 49—which restricts on-campus access by immigration enforcement without a warrant or court order.
Board members expressed appreciation for the feedback and noted staff would follow up on contract-status questions raised by earlier commenters.
