Natomas Unified marks Filipino American History Month with literacy events and family engagement

The board paused for a celebratory presentation recognizing Filipino American History Month. Deidra Powell, executive director of communications and family engagement, said the district organized a month of activities around the featured book Lolo's Sorry, Sorry Store by Sophia Lee, provided each elementary school with a copy for library use, shared a longer read-aloud with families and offered an activity guide for at-home participation. Powell said the district had more than 40 families attend a live virtual author event through Parent University.
Powell framed the observance as part of a broader district commitment to diversity, telling trustees that "Natomas Unified is a very diverse district with more than 80 countries represented and 60 languages spoken," and thanked the board for allowing time to recognize the month. The board then proceeded to routine business and later adopted a resolution formally recognizing October as Filipino American History Month.
